February 4 Flash Fiction: Curious

Today’s flash fiction prompt: Write from the perspective of a guardian angel. I found myself exploring the idea of worth on this one. Hope you enjoy my musings!

Curious

How do you pick out a person?

They are thoughts wrapped in flesh and bone and sinew. They are soul and spirit and secrets. A mystery to my simple nature. How do I know which is the right one? They are born mute, and yet, more seasoned guardians say they speak even before they leave the womb. They tell me to watch, to listen. And so I do.

I have one year to choose. One year to explore the world of people. To master my strengths, and discover which weaknesses those strengths complement. Some guardians are strong. Others are fast. The elders are clever and wise. I am none of those things. Only curious.

Perhaps I would work best with a painter, or a sculptor. Or a carpenter. Someone who works with their hands would be nice. But how does one discern whether a soul wrapped inside an infant will be a painter? Does it even matter? Their occupation doesn’t change my assignment.

The very special ones are often assigned multiple guardians, or even a whole host. Once, over a thousand were assigned to the Most Special One. Among them were our very best. The strong to battle demons, the fast to deliver messages, the wise to discern evil plots and plans. They were a sight, always coming and going.

But I know what I have is a gift. I’m allowed to choose the child I protect. And though it’s unlikely there will ever be another Most Special One, and I doubt I’ll ever come across a very special one, the child I choose will still be special to me. I don’t know how much use a guardian angel, whose only strength is her curiosity, can be to a human.

I can only hope that it will be enough.
